North Little Rock owns its electric department and is the state’s largest municipally-owned utility with 37,000 customers, 103 employees and an annual budget of $114 million. In addition to serving all of its corporate city limits, North Little Rock Electric Department also supplies power to 7,000 customers in neighboring Sherwood, Arkansas. The City wholly owns a hydroelectric generating station and is part owner of a new “clean coal” plant. At a time of galloping energy prices, North Little Rock Electric has been able to lower its electric rates for the past two years, thanks in large part to the unanimous passage by the City Council of a Least Cost Integrated Resource Plan. The Electric Department is a recognized leader in the areas of sustainability, rebates for commercial and residential customers and unique programs to reduce energy usage by all customer classes.
