Mike DeWein: Technical Director
Michael DeWein has served as Technical Director for the Alliance’s Building Codes Assistance Project (BCAP) since March 2005, providing technical support and direction to BCAP and its programs in more than 35 states nationwide. He works with policymakers, environmental groups, energy codes advocates, state energy offices, codes bureaus, public utility commissions, builders associations, design professionals, and others to promote the adoption and implementation of building energy codes. Current projects include a new energy code training video to be produced in Spanish and English with the Texas Energy Conservation Office, Texas Association of Builders, and others to educate builders and the building professions on energy code requirements and moisture- and mold-resistant building practice. Another recent project helped the insurance industry set insurance rates by grading municipalities on the quality and effectiveness of their building codes. Prior to joining the Alliance, DeWein worked as technical specialist in the Codes and Customer Service Bureaus at the New York State Energy Office (NYSEO), where he developed codes and standards and did outreach and project management and agency-wide presentation development and training. DeWein also helped develop and was the first trainer for the NYSTAR program, one of the early Home Energy Rating System programs for builders in New York. Before his NYSEO tenure, DeWein earned a degree in environmental engineering technology between stints as a builder and alternative energy retailer and installer in Massachusetts and Saranac Lake, New York.
