A total BLACK OUT greeted Clarence students to kick off the 2001-2002 school year. During 10 minutes of an intentional all-school lights-out, students and staff brainstormed ways to conserve energy in their own school building. The Clarence Green Schools team took the resulting list of ideas and began to implement them. This beginning for the school year had a unique entire school focus.
The Green Schools Team promoted energy conservation by holding a school-wide light switch sticker design contest. Three students from the All Science Club judged the contest, and local merchants and organizations donated prizes for the winners. In other activities, energy conservation tips were published in the school newsletter, and energy trivia questions were posed and answered over the PA system. Students learned about energy and applied that knowledge to investigate areas of waste in their building. In addition, teachers at Clarence competed to win a free dinner at a local restaurant by being exemplary energy conservationists. Energy-saving efforts by the students and staff at Clarence saved the school 35,550 kWh of electricity over seven months, amounting to over $5,000 in savings.
