Science teacher Beth Christiansen at Northeast Middle School in Midland, Michigan, e-mailed the Alliance last summer requesting a copy of its Static Electricity House TV PSA to teach her seventh grade students about the static electricity portion of their Electricity & Magnetism unit saying, "Your commercial is not only at a perfect level for these seventh grade students to understand, it is also at a perfect level for their humor."
And, this summer, she just got a chance to let us know how it went: "I had students watch the commercial and then respond in writing to the question: 'Would a "static house" really work? Explain why or why not using what you know about current electricity and static electricity.' I had a variety of answers to my question: some actually thought this would work, some thought it would work but would be impractical.
"As far as the commercial goes, the students really enjoyed it. They insisted on watching it two or three times. Some favorite parts were: the goodnight kiss at the end, the dog in socks, the family's hair, the sock stuck to the back of the Dad as he leaves for work.
"I appreciate your sharing this video tape with us. It gives the students something to think about by presenting the idea in a very entertaining way. It also gives me a chance to assess what they know and whether or not they can apply their knowledge."
