Lifetime Achievement Award: Senator Charles Percy
The Alliance to Save Energy Board of Directors, Awards Committee and staff are honored this year to bestow a special, lifetime achievement award to our founder, Senator Charles H. Percy. More than three decades ago, Senator Percy recognized the important national imperative of employing energy efficiency as the quickest, cheapest and cleanest way to meet America’s growing demand for energy. His vision for advancing the cause of energy efficiency was embodied in his formation of the Alliance to Save Energy – a bipartisan, strategic alliance between government and industry to work together to define the objective, develop and deploy the technologies, put in place the policies necessary to support the transition, and to educate key audiences about the need for and benefit of this important energy “resource”. Senator Percy’s leadership paved the way first for a national debate, followed quickly by state and national action to advance energy efficiency. As a tribute and testament to his lifetime goals, Alliance research indicates that energy efficiency has contributed more to meeting our energy demand since 1973 than any other single energy resource, including coal.
Thanks in large measure to Senator Percy and to the continuing legacy of strong leadership by a bipartisan group of federal representatives and industry leaders, the Alliance enjoys a widely acknowledged reputation as the premier energy efficiency organization. We are extremely grateful to Senator Percy for his lifelong devotion to the Alliance and to the cause of energy efficiency.
