Green Campus Highlights for February & March:

  • On February 10th and 11th, Green Campus interns and stakeholders from all 13 California campuses met in San Diego for the Alliance to Save Energy’s annual Green Campus Energy Efficiency Summit. Throughout the event, attendees discussed new projects and technologies, shared best practices, and planned future projects and activities on their respective campuses. Click here for more information or see individual newsletters for campus-specific summaries.

  • Green Campus interns at Cal Poly Pomona (791 KB) audited the home of campus President Michael J. Ortiz, gaining valuable hi-level support for their energy efficiency and student outreach activities, while identifying 4,354 kWh in energy savings potential.

  • Thanks to the Green Campus program, 88% of student voters (over 6000 students!) at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (1.7 MB) voted to fund and approve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for the campus Recreation Center. As part of the campaign, Green Campus interns made a three minute video on the energy savings afforded by green building and design.

  • Green Campus interns at Chico State (196 KB) have turned their attention to campus fraternities and sororities with a new “Greeks Going Green” project. Starting with the Alpha Phi sorority, interns will conduct an energy audit of the house, install The Energy Detective (TED) real-time energy monitoring system, and retrofit the house with CFLs and other efficient technologies.

  • Interns at CSU San Bernardino(224 KB) launched Green Apartment Battles in the Arrowhead Village apartment community. Interns will perform an energy audit of each apartment, recommend energy saving behavioral changes, and conduct follow-up surveys to determine which apartment saves the most energy and adopts the most efficient behavior.

  • Working closely with campus stakeholders, Green Campus interns at Humboldt State (1 MB) have embarked on a Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx) project aimed at recommissioning the campus Wildlife Center and Student Health Center. Interns have focused on researching the costs and feasibility of energy efficient variable air volume fume hoods and hot water distribution systems, which upon initial estimates may reduce energy use by 20-30%.

  • The San Diego State (3.8 MB) Green Campus team launched the “Switch to Save Energy” dorm competition. Lasting 4 weeks, the competition takes place between University Towers and Chapultepec to determine which building can reduce the most energy from the previous year’s baseline level.

  • Stanford (360 KB) Green Campus interns held their first-ever stakeholder meeting with representatives from the Facilities, Housing, and Dining Departments in order to introduce the Green Campus program and discuss upcoming projects on the Stanford campus. Projects on the docket include mock-energy bills, real time energy monitoring, and residential lighting audits.

  • UC Berkeley (314 KB) Green Campus Interns have teamed up with MBA students to promote energy efficiency within the Haas School of Business. In addition to performing lighting audits, conducting behavioral surveys, and developing a carbon-neutrality plan, the group is organizing a competition challenging the school to reduce energy use by as much as 10%.

  • The results are in! After reviewing the data, UC Irvine (367 KB) announced the winner of its fall 2007 fume hood competition. With average fume hood sash height reductions of 3.5 inches over the 3 week competition, the winning labs – run by chemistry professors Suzanne Blum and Alan Heyduk – led the way towards saving an estimated 83,790 kWh/year, or 1117 kWh per fume hood.

  • Green Campus interns at UC Merced (288 KB) have joined forces with the campus Green Club to maximize their reach across campus. As a result of the collaboration, Green Campus hopes to increase student involvement in energy competitions and other outreach events on campus.

  • UC San Diego (410 KB) Green Campus interns have begun conducting lab and office energy assessments of two buildings at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. As part of their comparative survey, interns examine fume hood sash heights, compressed air usage, refrigeration, lighting, and plug loads in labs and offices within each of the buildings.

  • With the help of Green Campus interns, UC Santa Barbara (217 KB) hopes to institutionalize energy savings by signing exclusive purchasing agreements to supply Energy Star and other efficient equipment in buildings and departments across campus.

  • The UC Santa Cruz (330 KB) Green Campus program continues its CFL exchange efforts with a planned event in the College 8 residential community. Interns hope to build on the success of past CFL exchanges, including the October 2007 Change-a-Light Campaign, when more than 3,000 CFLs were distributed across campus.
