Chairman’s Award
Lee Scott, Chief Executive Officer, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
This year Senator Mark Pryor (D-AR) will be presenting the Chairman’s Award to Lee Scott, Chief Executive Officer of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in recognition of the retail giant’s commitment to energy efficiency and the environment.
In 2005, Lee Scott issued a challenge to transform the company from the largest private consumer of electricity in America to an organization that is 100 percent supplied by renewable energy, creates zero waste and sells products that sustain the world’s natural resources and the environment.
As a result, Wal-Mart has committed to investing approximately $550 million a year in efficiency and sustainable technologies, reducing greenhouse gases 20 percent over the next 7 years, increasing the efficiency of its heavy duty truck fleet by 25 percent in 3 years and 100 percent in ten years, and implanting a “green company” program in China that shows preference to participating suppliers.
In addition to these extraordinary efforts, Wal-Mart has a wide range of existing energy-efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction policies in place, including their “no idle” truck fleet policy, the use of daylight harvesting at over 2,000 locations, cool roof technology, occupancy sensors, utilization of LED lighting for building signage, and an extensive waste heat capture system for refrigeration equipment.
For its innovative corporate policy, strong leadership, and continued contribution to the cause of energy efficiency, we are pleased Chairman Pryor has chosen to recognize Wal-Mart for this important and prestigious award.
