Building Codes and Efficient Windows Research Internship

The Alliance to Save Energy is accepting applications for a Buildings Codes and Efficient Windows Research Intern for May to August 2008. The internship is full-time and interns are paid an hourly wage with a monthly WMATA transportation stipend. The Building Codes Assistance Project (BCAP) internship will focus on energy-efficient building projects, building codes in the U.S. and abroad, the Efficient Windows Collaborative (EWC) part of the internship will focus on efficient window advancements.
Intern's primary duties will include:
- Technical research on high efficiency windows;
- Research on state and local energy legislation and policies toward residential and commercial new construction;
- Research on high performance building programs (i.e. LEED, Energy Star) and their uptake in local markets and crossover with energy codes;
- Crafting window design toolkits for schools and offices;
- Helping create and update a Window Selection Tool;
- Writing the Efficient Windows Collaborative newsletter;
- Advocating for DOE’s Building Code Program.
The internship provides an opportunity to gain:
- Understanding of state and local policy, and the potential partnership between energy efficiency advocates and environmental advocate organizations (and policy);
- Communication skills;
- Technical knowledge of energy efficient buildings and the role of windows in energy-efficient design;
- Knowledge of building codes and the code adoption process;
- Receive valuable experience working in a non-profit office;
environment
- Improve writing skills, hone research capabilities, and gain public relations experience;
- Work with Building and Utilities team on daily projects to enhance energy-efficient work throughout the United States and abroad.
Required Skills:
- Independence;
- Proficiency in web research;
- Good communications and writing skills (possibly some technical writing);
- Interest in policy, energy, and the built environment;
- Ability to work independently and work well with others;
- Basic knowledge of website design is a bonus, but not required.
