Exxon Mobil Corporation is the world’s largest integrated oil company engaged in oil and gas exploration, production, refining, supply, transportation, and marketing worldwide. At the end of 2008, ExxonMobil’s proved reserves base increased to 22.8 billion oil-equivalent barrels. ExxonMobil has interests in 38 refineries and more than 32,000 retail sites around the world, and is a leading marketer of finished lubricants. In addition, ExxonMobil products and services are provided at more than 630 airports and at 180 marine ports around the world. Its chemical company is a premier supplier of petrochemicals.
ExxonMobil is a strong advocate of policies that promote energy efficiency; reduce greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions; and support research and development of new, low-GHG technologies. Over the years, the company has also supported the scientific and business communities in undertaking research to identify and develop economically competitive and affordable technologies to reduce long-term global GHG emissions while meeting the world’s growing demand for energy.
For its part, ExxonMobil is taking action to mitigate GHG emissions today and to support the development of advanced energy technologies with the potential to significantly reduce future emissions. ExxonMobil has active programs to improve energy efficiency and to reduce flaring of natural gas in our operations. Steps taken in these programs since 2005 resulted in reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions of about 7 million tons in 2008, the equivalent of taking about 1.4 million cars off the roads in the United States. ExxonMobil is currently working to identify and implement additional measures to more than double these reductions in the near future.
