Workforce Education & Training Update – September 2009
This month, 5 Green Campus Intern teams integrated energy efficiency into course curricula: UC Berkeley, Cal Poly SLO, Humboldt, UC Santa Cruz, and Chico. These academic opportunities contribute to the workforce education and training efforts of the Green Campus Program to prepare the broader student body as the next generation of energy efficiency professionals.
For the 10th consecutive semester in a row, UC Berkeley Green Campus Interns will be organizing Energy DeCal, with 38 students enrolled and six on the waiting list. Down the coast, Cal Poly SLO and UC Santa Cruz will be offering for-credit internship opportunities and Cal Poly SLO will also be working with the Dean of the College of Architecture and Design to infuse energy efficiency concepts into their introductory course with 90 students. Finally Chico State and Humboldt State will both be offering project-based for-credit opportunities for students to work learn how to conduct energy assessments, lighting retrofits, and vending miser installation.
In news from our alumni network, in July graduated intern Sean Higbee was hired as the Sustainability Coordinator for Bentley Prince Street, California’s largest carpet manufacturer. Mr. Higbee reported that his new position is much like his work with Green Campus, and in an email to the UCSC interns and Alliance staff said “There is no doubt that my Green Campus internship provided me with the experience, qualifications, and skills necessary for this position.”
