Communications and Energy Hog Intern

Full-time (37.5 hours/week), $11/hour, from Sept 1 to December 15, 2009

Intern’s primary duties:

The intern will spend half of their time supporting consumer campaigns and media outreach efforts. The other half of their time will be spent administering the Energy Hog Program.

Communications duties:

  • Assist as needed on national consumer education campaigns, including helping with logistics and media outreach for media events.
  • Make pitch calls to media on news stories and to TV and radio public affairs directors regarding airing the Alliance’s award-winning PSAs.
  • Draft news releases and develop materials and prepare media kits.
  • Conduct internet research.
  • Work with the team to update the consumer and media sections of the Alliance website.
  • Assist team member with timesheet and administrative duties.

Energy Hog Program duties:

  • Conduct outreach to educator organizations, school districts, and teachers to solicit participation in Energy Hog Program.
  • Manage program shipping schedule, collect legal forms, and conduct phone training for teachers on the Energy Hog Program.
  • Write newsletter articles and support other media outreach efforts.

Desired skills/qualifications:

  • Accuracy and strong attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and to multitask.
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills to convey Alliance messages to media and public
  • Interest in communications and media relations
  • Interest in national energy policy issues
  • Outgoing personality suited to making media pitch calls
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office programs; Excel and PowerPoint a plus
  • Spanish language skills a plus
  • Knowledge of or some familiarity with social media (Facebook, Youtube, Twitter) a plus.
