Killer Watts Wash Out Weasels on Wet Opening Day
WASHINGTON, DC – A slippery slugfest under darkened skies marked the beginning of the fourth season of Environmental Non-Profit League softball as the Alliance to Save Energy’s Killer Watts defeated the American Rivers Fighting Green Weasels 11-6 on Monday in a weather-shortened five-inning game.
Shortstop Sean Garcia and centerfielder Jake from Pitt led the Watts with a combined three homeruns. Third basemen Paul Karrer added a 4 for 5 day with two doubles and 2 RBI.
The battery of pitcher Holly Seeloff and catcher Jess Molina battled through unfavorable conditions to stop two potential Weasel rallies, including escaping from a bases loaded, one out jam during a tie game in the bottom of the third inning. After a force out at home on a grounder to Seeloff, a heads up play by left fielder Jared Diamond Philips on a one-hopper over the infield forced out the runner at second, negating the Weasels’ run on the play.
Play continued into the top of the sixth inning when the Watts blew the game open with 11 runs. As conditions worsened amid diminishing daylight and a steady drizzle, the game was called by the Weasels after recording only two outs in the inning. Because the full inning was not completed and league rules do not allow for delayed or suspended games, the contest reverted to the score at the end of the fifth inning, an 11-6 margin in favor of the Watts.
The Watts’ next game is Monday, April 20 against the Defenders of Wildlife Killer Fairy Shrimp. The first pitch is at 6:07pm.
Notes: Veteran first baseman Steve Capanna remains sidelined with an unspecified academic malady. He is expected to make a start in the Johns Hopkins Instructional League later this month on a rehab assignment.
