WASHINGTON – The Alliance to Save Energy Killer Watts (presented by Sign of the WhaleTM), riding on timely hits and aggressive baserunning, came from behind to defeat the Naturals of The Nature Conservancy 11-9 on Tuesday night, holding their opponents scoreless over the final four innings.
Down in an early 9-3 hole, the Watts scored two runs in the 3rd and 4th innings before surging ahead on four runs in the 6th after a key one-out, two-run single from outfielder Joe “Intern X” Teng put them up for good at 10-9. The offense was buoyed by two runs each from outfielder Rob Magicspock, infielder Paul Karrer, and Alliance newcomer Paul Bostrom, as well as a towering two-run homer from first baseman Cory Wagner.
The Watts’ most impressive performance came manning the diamond behind pitcher Holly Seeloff (2-0), shutting out the Naturals after the 3rd inning. The defense snuffed out multiple rallies with runners on base by converting key force outs on the left side of the infield, including twin assists from third baseman Karrer and shortstop Sean “Glove Punter” Garcia on grounders bobbled by the other. Garcia, second baseman Jess Molina, and Wagner also combined for a rare 6-4-3 double play in the 4th, negating a lead-off single by the Naturals.
The Killer Watts return to action Monday against the National Wildlife Federation / Audubon Society Scrubjays. First pitch is set for 6:10 pm.
NOTES: The Watts’ game last week against the Defenders of Wildlife Killer Fairy Shrimp was postponed due to rain. A make-up game has yet to be scheduled… Watts veteran Steve Capanna remains sidelined for the rest of the academic year with tired typing fingers. A recent rehab start in the Johns Hopkins Instructional League yielded continuing school-related issues. He is expected to begin throwing on the side later this month.
