WASHINGTON –Through a stellar defensive performance and late-blooming run production, the Alliance to Save Energy Killer Watts (presented by Sign of the WhaleTM) overcame a slow offensive start Monday night to defeat the World Wildlife Fund Fighting Pandas 9-7. At 5-0 on the season, the Watts continue their amazing run out of the gate, extending their overall winning streak to seven games since the end of 2008.
The Alliance’s flair with the leather saved several runs as the Watts snuffed out three potential big innings for the Pandas early, keeping their deficit at just 4-0 going into the 4th inning. Left fielder Jared Kronitz combined a laser-beam throw to nail a runner at the plate in the 1st with a sliding backhanded catch in the 5th.
Pitcher David Mann (2-0) fielded several grounders and liners back to the mound, and shortstop Paul Bostrom (filling in for regular starter Sean Garcia) converted a handful of chances on the left side of the infield. Third baseman Paul Karrer finished the game by chasing down a dribbler that went under Mann’s glove and throwing to first base for the final out.
Kronitz and Karrer led the Watts’ lineup by reaching base four times each, and outfielders Jake Repanshek and Rob Magsipoc crushed multiple Panda offerings in the late innings to drive in crucial runs. The bottom of the lineup came alive near the end of the game, as infielder Beth Denoia, Jess Molina, and Kelly Guhanick combined with outfielder Eric Plunkett to deliver sharp hits through the Panda defense.
The next game for the Killer Watts is Monday, June 8 against the Global Swarming squad fielded by the League of Conservation Voters and EarthJustice. First pitch is set for 6:17pm.
NOTES: The Alliance’s attempt at a makeup of a previous rainout with the NWF/Audubon Scrubjays was washed out Thursday night by spotty downpours and the threat of lightning. Team management is in the process of rescheduling that game and another makeup against the Defenders of Wildlife Killer Fairy Shrimp during the open week preceding the Independence Day Holiday….Watts veteran Steve Capanna’s contract had been reacquired for last week’s game for the Alliance’s Greek affiliate, Μεγάλα ραβδιά in exchange for a new bat and an empanada from Julia’s, but the snake-bitten infielder’s luck washed away any chances of playing. As of this week, Capanna has re-enlisted with the Johns Hopkins Academic Corps and remains uncertain to return to action this season.
