Torn Apart by Claws of Undefeated Sierra Club, Watts Suffer First Loss

WASHINGTON – Fighting for Environmental Non-Profit League supremacy, the Alliance to Save Energy Killer Watts (presented by Sign of the WhaleTM) instead fell flat Tuesday night, torn asunder by their own defensive miscues and the bats of the Sierra Club CLAW. The Watts battled back from an early six-run deficit to get the game to 6-5 after the fourth inning, but gave up a pair of nine-run frames in the fifth and sixth, crushing their dreams of an unprecedented undefeated season by a score of 27-10.

The Alliance team hung tough in the early innings, keeping CLAW at bay by diffusing three major rallies with the stellar defensive acumen that had lifted them so many times during the campaign. The wheels fell off the wagon in the late innings, however, as fielding errors, errant throws, and an impressive CLAW hitting display brought down the local favorites in humbling fashion. Said shortstop Sean “I’ve Seen It All Before” Garcia during a post-game interview at Sign of the Whale, “I haven’t been this down after a loss since Geena Davis dropped the throw at home plate at the end of A League of Their Own.” name

The Watts’ bats were unable to keep pace with CLAW, now at 7-0 and taking sole possession of first place in the ENPL. Multiple promising rallies were unable to plate more than a couple runs, effectively ending any chance the Alliance had at overcoming its bad day defensively. Outfielders Joe “Intern X” Teng and Jared Kronitz put in three hits and three RBI a piece, while rainbow-socked third baseman Paul Karrer scored three times.

NOTES: Pitcher Holly Seeloff’s record dropped to 4-1 on the year….Wandering Watts veteran Steve Capanna pursued a quiet week reading at home, finally finishing Stephenie Meyer’s young-adult vampire-romance novel series Twilight.
