July 5, 2009 – A partnership of Alliance and several other national organizations (including the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI); the National Association of State Energy Offices (NASEO); ASHRAE; AIA; and the New Buildings Institute) is organizing a broad-based public-private consortium to submit a proposal to DOE for a $1 million, 3-year project to help identify and advance market acceptance of technologies and practices needed to move commercial buildings toward “net-zero energy” performance by 2050.
We invite Alliance Associates to participate in this effort as members of the Zero Energy Commercial Buildings Consortium, along with other interested public and private organizations – see the consortium invitation letter for more information. While the Consortium will continue to be open to new participants, if we receive your letter of interest no later than Friday 10 July (submitted to RHelminiak@ahrinet.org) this will allow us to add your organization to the Consortium list submitted to DOE.
Near-term activities of the Consortium will focus on helping DOE and its National Laboratories to identify major technologies and practices needed for zero-energy buildings, characterize current costs and performance, and roadmap the technology improvements needed as well as other barriers and strategic solutions to widespread market acceptance.
The Consortium will also play a central role in helping to coordinate this DOE initiative with other activities to advance commercial building performance underway by states, utilities, and the private sector (including DOE’s sector-specific alliances). In addition to updating the technology inventory, future Consortium activities, subject to DOE approval and funding, may include the development, delivery, and case study documentation of demonstration projects and innovative pilot programs to improve energy performance of new and existing commercial buildings.
There is no cost to participate in the Consortium. However, it is expected that members will agree to participate in workshops, webinars, and work-groups to help draft and review technical and market assessment reports. Members will be asked to report their in-kind staff efforts as part of the required non-DOE matching funds. In addition, related projects and programs funded with non-federal sources may be allowable as matching effort in some cases, and are greatly appreciated by the Consortium. If you are implementing such projects that may offer a potential match please indicate this in your letter of interest.
