To help tomorrow's business leaders appreciate the merits of sustainable business practices, Walmart is running a competition for college students to develop unique sustainable business plans or products. Called the Walmart Better Living Business Plan Challenge, this nationwide competition offers students a chance to showcase their best ideas to experienced business leaders, while also giving Walmart an opportunity to learn from some of the brightest minds in the world.
Up to 64 schools will be chosen to field campus-wide competitions. Come February, finalists will be selected through eight on-campus regional competitions, and then flown to Arkansas to present their product or business plan to Walmart executives. The winning team will receive $20,000 to invest in their plan or product.
Last year, the University of Arkansas took first place for its plan, Ground Up Biosolutions, a sustainable recycling strategy for municipalities and poultry farms. Second place went to University of Virginia for its proposed business Clean India, which would provide water cleaning and recycling services for the textile industry in India.
