APP Zero Energy Homes Workshop

The US Department of Energy (USDOE) and the Alliance to Save Energy hosted an Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP) Zero Energy Homes Workshop at the Alliance’s offices on September 22 – 23, 2009.

The Canadian and US organizers of the workshop – Environment Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Net-Zero Energy Home Coalition, USDOE, North American Insulation Manufacturers Association, and Alliance to Save Energy—organized this workshop as the first step in a net zero energy project under the APP, a seven-country partnership committed to accelerating the development and deployment of clean energy technologies. The September workshop and its follow-on activities have been officially endorsed as an APP flagship project.

Notes and action items from the worksop are available in the:

The goals for the workshop were to:

  • Agree on a pragmatic approach for reaching internationally applicable definitions of net zero energy and net zero ready homes;
  • Begin to develop an international industry community committed to raising awareness and accelerating the adoption of net zero energy homes through information sharing and concrete projects;
  • Discuss key challenges that this international community could take on to address barriers to international acceptance and adoption of net zero energy homes (and potentially other types of buildings); and
  • Discuss next steps in the implementation of a series of actions under the project, including community scale demonstrations, development of workshop modules or roadmaps, and technology diffusion and deployment (e.g., through workshops, webinars, and design charrettes).

The 36 participants at the workshop represented a mixture of key buildings industry and utility representatives, researchers, and government officials from Canada and the United States.
