Representing 99 percent of the U.S. manufacturers and employing over 9 million people, small- and medium-sized manufacturers (SMMs) are faced with a number of unique energy challenges, such as higher per unit energy prices than larger competitors, lower operating capital and lack of dedicated energy managers – all of which make energy efficiency critical to protecting our U.S manufacturing base.
The Alliance is developing a series 10+ case studies on American SMMs who have successfully implemented energy efficiency measures that demonstrate deep energy savings, while maintaining or improving facility productivity. These studies will offer a technical description of efficiency enhancements, but also underscore the ancillary benefits associated with energy efficiency – enhanced competitiveness, quality jobs, strong national security – as well as its dramatic effect on the U.S. supply chain.
The intent of this series is to showcase the "story" of energy efficiency as an energy resource, and its ability to keep American SMMs in business, profitable and productive.
By publicizing successes of various SMMs across industry subsectors and geographic locations, the Alliance will raise the profile of U.S. manufacturing and highlight the potential energy-savings locked in small- and medium-sized manufacturers. Case studies will highlight the effective use of internal and external resources, efficiency champions and effective decision making to achieve lasting efficiency gains. Additionally, these studies will validate energy efficiency as an economically productive resource that will advance U.S. competitiveness in international commerce.
