Alliance Associate AT&T has started “greening” their corporate fleet of vehicles by switching to 15,000 highly efficient, clean fuel vehicles over a 10-year period.
The benefits of this corporate fleet overhaul are detailed in a case study conducted by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), which found that initiatives such as AT&T's can reduce CO2 by over 210,000 metric tons and gasoline consumption by 49 million gallons. The CAR study also found that the switch to more fuel-efficient vehicle fleets can also reduce foreign oil dependence and create as many as 1,200 jobs annually.
“Creating jobs and saving energy simultaneously is the kind of "two-punch" energy efficiency strategy that any company with a vehicle fleet can follow," says Chris Amos, director of Associate Relations at the Alliance to Save Energy. "The Alliance applauds companies like AT&T that take on big energy efficiency initiatives; they are in effect creating a new business model for others to follow."
Currently, corporate vehicle fleets account for nearly 20 percent of annual new vehicles. Shifting even a portion of these vehicles to alternative energy will not only save energy and spur job creation, but can in time drive down the market cost of fuel-efficient vehicles. Says Amos, "By embracing fuel efficiency early on, business like AT&T are helping to drive the market toward fuel-efficient transportation for consumers and corporate entities alike."
