Constellation Subsidary Awarded $200 Million in Smart Grid Funding

Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE), a subsidary of Alliance Associate Constellation Energy, was awarded $200 million in stimulus funds toward a comprehensive smart grid initiative. Part of a $3.4 billion fund, the award was borne of President Obama’s recently announced commitment to a national smart grid. BGE is one of 100 award recipients chosen by the U.S. Department of Energy, and one of only six to receive the maximum $200 million.

Says BGE Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Mayo A. Shattuck III, "We are extremely pleased the Obama Administration has selected BGE for this highly competitive and coveted grant, which moves BGE’s landmark Smart Grid proposal one step closer to reality. When fully implemented, BGE’s Smart Grid program will be one of the most advanced in the nation and include the installation of 2 million residential and commercial smart meters.”

As part of this grant, 1.1 million households will gain access to smart meters, which will help them monitor and adjust energy usage during peak hours. By BGE's estimates, the initiative calls for 1,700 new jobs and will save customers $2.6 billion. Maryland Public Service Commission is currently reviewing the initiative, and Shattuck believes the Commission will approve it by the end of the year.
