November 11, 2009 – Alliance Associate Serious Materials was selected by the Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County (CEDA) – the largest weatherization agency in the U.S. – to participate in the Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program. Their patented SeriousWindows will be used to lower the energy bills for income-eligible families. In addition, the effort promises to generate hundreds of new local jobs in manufacturing and window installation.
"The single greatest immediate impact we can have on the environment ... is weatherization" said Vice President Joe Biden while speaking at Serious Materials Chicago window factory in April 2009. "It has the advantage of creating jobs, jobs right here in America. You’re making some of the most energy-efficient windows in the world, I would argue, the most energy-efficient windows in the world."
One of the key factors in the selection of Serious Materials was an update to the software used by the State of Illinois to analyze the effects of energy saving methods. The previous software was incapable of tracking energy saved by installing high-insulating windows, so their value was overlooked. Now, Serious Materials has an opportunity to make a significant impact on this community. The company recently bought a window factory in Chicago, bringing back some of the jobs lost when the factory closed in 2008. With this new program, Serious Materials hopes to hire back many more.
