December 1, 2009 marks the end of an era here at the Alliance: after almost 19 years, Joe Loper, our senior vice president for Policy and Research, will be leaving to explore new opportunities. Joe began his career at the Alliance in 1991, straight from graduate school and an internship with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), making his position with us his first, and only, professional career stop thus far! Over his tenure, Joe has worked in many positions and subject areas and has “climbed the management ladder”, from directing the Alliance’s international programs to writing reports for the Research Team to guiding energy efficiency policy as our first-ever “senior VP”.
Joe says of the Alliance, “Whenever I got the urge to work on something new, I realized that I could work on that thing here.” He has written on a broad range of issues related to energy efficiency, including how state and local tax policy affects energy use, energy management in the federal government and efficiency in data centers, and has testified before the U.S. Congress on several occasions. His most recent foray has taken him into the challenging field of evaluating, measuring and verifying energy savings, about which he has authored a soon-to-be-released report.
On his contributions to the Alliance, President Kateri Callahan: “Joe has brought his ‘full game’ to the Alliance each and every day, guiding his team and our policy and research efforts with critical and creative thinking, strong management skills and dedication to excellence.” She concluded by addressing Joe’s impact, noting: “Joe’s many contributions have helped to garner credibility for the Alliance and to move its agenda on energy efficiency not just in the U.S., but around the world.”
Over the nearly two decades that Joe has worked at the Alliance, Washington and the world’s perception of energy efficiency has evolved significantly, from an afterthought to a cornerstone of the emerging clean energy economy. Joe has been an integral part of this sea change and, though he is undecided on his next destination, we are confident that he will continue to have an impact on the future of energy efficiency. All of us at the Alliance wish Joe much good fortune as he ventures forward to meet the challenges and opportunities that await him “post-Alliance”!
