Earth Apple Awards 2002 3rd Place, Middle Schools

Sulzburger Middle School
Period: September 2001 - May 2002
Energy Savings
Electricity: 194,230
Or 43 percent

Students and staff at Sulzberger Middle School focused on creating energy consciousness in their school. “Save Energy” flyers were posted all over the school and the Energy Patrol gave out 10¢ fines to the classrooms that left their lights on, window open, or shade up. By the end of the year, the team found that no one was fined. In addition, a group of students created an energy video using puppets entitled “Welcome to Greenville, the Town that Saves Energy.”

Sulzberger also had a strong recycling program. The entire school participated in collecting aluminum cans and from January to June of 2002, they collected and recycled 120 pounds of cans! The school also held its 3rd Trash Fashion Show, in which all costumes were made from recyclable materials.

Sulzberger’s Green Schools program saved 194,230 kWh, reflecting a savings of 43%. This has been a very successful program.
