South Africa

South Africa has long enjoyed some of the lowest energy costs in the world because of its abundant and inexpensive coal. Naturally, South Africa has become highly dependent on the combustion of coal for its energy supply.

Over the past 10 years the South African government has pushed forward with an ambitious plan to bring water services to millions without regular access. Capital funding for infrastructure is provided by the government, but operational costs lie with cash-strapped municipalities. The Alliance’s Watergy program is helping South African municipalities deliver potable water to low-income areas in a manner that is energy and water efficient, cost effective, and environmentally friendly.

Watergy programs conceptualized and implemented with technical assistance from the Alliance improve water supply and sanitation for disadvantaged residents, while decreasing the emissions that cause climate change. Assistance through the Alliance Watergy/South Africa program takes the form of developing monitoring and metering strategies, pressure management approaches that reduce water losses from leaky pipes and fixtures, and the repair of toilets and other plumbing fixtures in low-income areas. The Alliance’s implementing partner in South Africa is Re-Solve Consulting (Pty) Ltd.
