6th Annual Green Campus Energy Efficiency Summit
January 31st-February 1st, 2010
For the sixth year running, the Alliance to Save Energy’s Green Campus Program convened over 140 students, staff, administrators and faculty from 15 campuses to discuss and brainstorm energy efficiency issues in higher education. About 60 of these participants represented Green Campus student interns who are actively managing projects on campus to save energy, water, and build their skill set to become the next generation of energy efficiency professionals.
For the first day and a half, students participated in trainings, including three blocks of concurrent sessions, orientations for new and intermediate interns, energy auditing workshops, peer project exchanges, and heard updates on new and emerging technologies.
On Sunday, January 31, Alliance Associate representatives from Southern California Edison and Trane's Tim Sisson joined Alliance Vice President for Education Merrilee Harrigan and other panelists from Los Angeles Trade Technical College, URS Consulting, and the LA Department of Water and Power to discuss emerging green career trends. Earlier that day, Green Campus alumni sat on a panel to share success stories of emerging from the Green Campus Program into successful careers.
On Monday, February 1, Advisor for the California Energy Commission Panama Bartholomy discussed energy issues and the future for green jobs. Also, attendees engaged in a world café brainstorm event during which they split into pre-assigned breakout groups to participate in a guided brainstorm session to discuss how technical and policy-oriented developments in energy efficiency pertain to their institution and Green Campus projects. Finally, Alliance Vice President for Programs Jeff Harris led a lunchtime discussion regarding “Energy Efficiency Policy Trends, Pinch-Points, and Prospects.”
Among the attending campuses, the Alliance welcomed the three newest additions, West Los Angeles Community College, East Los Angeles Community College, and Los Angeles Southwest College. Representatives from these campuses, as well as the Los Angeles Community College District, Southern California Edison, and the CSU Chancellors Office participated in a post-conference planning meeting to discuss how the program can best serve community colleges.
Green Campus converges twice a year and aims to facilitate ongoing networking and collaborations following this event and before the 2010 UC/CSU/CCC Sustainability Conference at Los Angeles Trade Technical College.
