The United States Industrial sector consumes about one-third of the energy used by the U.S. The Alliance to Save Energy works with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program (DOE-ITP) conducting analysis, outreach, and awareness for the DOE-ITP’s “Save Energy Now” initiative, which helps industrial plants operate more efficiently and profitably by identifying ways to reduce energy use in key industrial process systems. In addition, the Alliance is active in an industry-led effort to create a plant certification program for industrial facilities and is helping develop assessment standards to help facilities assess their steam, process heating, compressed air, and pumping systems.
Current Projects
Current Alliance industrial projects include:
- The Efficient Enterprises: Powering American Industry events series, bringing government, industry and academic experts to Capitol Hill to discuss efficiency opportunities and obstacles
- Partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program (DOE-ITP) to conduct analysis, outreach for the DOE-ITP’s “Save Energy Now” program, which helps industrial plants operate more efficiently and profitably by identifying ways to reduce energy use in key industrial systems.
- Collaborating with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and others to develop industrial system assessment standards;
- Leading efforts to raise awareness and interest in system assessment standards and evolving plant certification programs;
- Leveraging existing DOE Best Practices Steam resources and working with industry advisors to DOE on industrial steam topics.
Industrial Efficiency in Federal Legislation
Both the pending Senate Energy bill (ACELA 2009) and House-passed energy and climate bill (ACES Act 2009) contain significant industrial energy efficiency provisions, including expanded research and development and financing for industrial energy efficiency. For Alliance summaries of these provisions, see the links below:
- Manufacturing Efficiency Provisions in the Senate’s American Clean Energy Leadership Act of 2009
- Industrial Efficiency Provisions in the House-passed American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009
Industrial Advocacy
The Alliance also supports industrial energy efficiency through our advocacy and appropriations work. For more information on the appropriations process, see our appropriations page.
