Efficient appliances reduce utility bills while improving home functionality and comfort.

Reduce Bills, Improve Functionality

In a typical American home, appliances, lighting and refrigeration comprise up to 20 percent of whole home energy use, or about $400 dollars per year on household utility bills. Efficient appliances reduce utility bills while improving home functionality and comfort. Since most appliances last between 10 and 15 years, efficient appliances can more than pay for themselves through the lifetime purchase.

Appliance Standards

The U.S. Congress requires manufacturers to produce products that meet minimum energy efficiency specifications. Appliance standards cover a growing set of products, including: air conditioners, refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines.

Appliance Labeling

In addition to meeting energy standards, manufacturers of most major home appliances must attach EnergyGuide labels that estimate the product's energy consumption or energy efficiency. These labels also identify the highest and lowest energy consumption or efficiency estimates of similar appliance models.
