The Alliance Board Adds Utility, Industry Leaders

Release Date: Friday, November 16, 2012

The Alliance’s Board of Directors has elected two new members, Erwin Furukawa, Senior Vice President of Customer Service at Southern California Edison (SCE), and J. Michael McQuade, Senior Vice President of Science & Technology for United Technologies Corporation (UTC).

“We are delighted to welcome these two distinguished energy leaders to our stellar board of directors,” commented Alliance President Kateri Callahan. “Their experience and insights will help the Alliance drive its mission to advance energy efficiency here in the U.S. and globally.”

Our Newest Board Members

Furukawa is responsible for industry-leading demand-side management programs, innovative customer products and services, customer engagement and call center operations, field services, account management, customer satisfaction, and implementation of advanced metering at SCE, one of the nation’s largest electric utilities. Previously, as head of SCE’s Customer Programs & Services division, Furukawa was responsible for transforming the customer experience for SCE’s business and residential customers through innovative tools, technologies, and engagement strategies.

“At Southern California Edison, we are proud that our customers lead the nation in embracing energy efficiency,” said Furukawa. “Their enthusiastic participation in SCE’s programs has led to more affordable energy bills for our customers, increased access to low-cost energy efficiency as a reliable energy resource for our company, and a cleaner environment for all. I look forward to continuing SCE’s work with the Alliance to promote cost-effective energy efficiency as an integral component of our country’s energy future.”

McQuade has held his current post at UTC since September 2006. His responsibilities include overseeing UTC Power and UTC’s Research Center and providing strategic oversight and guidance for research and development (R&D) activities throughout the corporation. He has also held senior R&D and general management positions with technology development oversight at 3M and Eastman Kodak. McQuade has been an active participant in the Alliance Commission on National Energy Efficiency Policy – a broad and diverse group of energy and environmental leaders that is identifying public policies aimed at doubling U.S. energy productivity by 2030 – where he has worked closely with several Alliance board members, including the current industry co-chair, National Grid US President Tom King.

“As a global community, we live at the confluence of two unequivocal facts,” said McQuade. “We must reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide to combat the impact of climate change, and we must ensure the affordable energy resources necessary for economic growth. The Alliance has been at the vanguard in championing the valuable role energy efficiency plays in helping us meet these grand challenges. I am honored to be a part of this important work.”
