Alliance Welcomes Bill to Speed Home Weatherization Funding
WASHINGTON – The Alliance to Save Energy released the following statement from President Jason Hartke on Wednesday after Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Chris Coons (D-Del.), and Jack Reed (D-R.I.) introduced the Investing in State Energy Act to speed the distribution of funds to states and local partners from the Weatherization Assistance Program and the State Energy Program:
“Low-income Americans in both rural and urban areas spend a far greater share of their income on energy costs and are struggling to keep up. In fact, 25 million American households are forced to choose between buying food and medicine or paying their energy bills.
The Weatherization Assistance Program has helped millions of families by permanently reducing their energy bills. For every dollar invested in weatherization, $1.72 is generated in energy benefits and another $2.78 in non-energy benefits. That’s a tremendous return on investment. But many households remain on waitlists around the country, and this bill will ensure that weatherization funds are spent promptly and can be used most effectively. This should not only reduce the wait times for families seeking weatherization assistance but also give state agencies more time and certainty to plan their projects and maximize energy savings and other co-benefits.
We want to commend and thank Sens. Shaheen, Collins, Coons, and Reed for their strong leadership in working to improve this important program.”
Sens. Shaheen, Coons, and Collins all serve on the Alliance’s Honorary Board of Advisors. Sen. Shaheen is honorary chair while Sen. Coons is honorary vice-chair.
