WASHINGTON—The Alliance to Save Energy released the following statement from President Jason Hartke in response to President Trump tweeting his intention Wednesday to revoke California’s authority to maintain strict vehicle greenhouse gas standards:

“The state of California, along with 13 other states, has ensured consumers’ demands for cleaner air and more efficient cars will be met by setting strong clean car standards that effectively backstop federal standards. Together, these jurisdictions represent more than a third of the U.S. auto market, and these standards provide automakers the market certainty to innovate better cars for the future and remain global leaders in the industry.”

“The Trump Administration’s plans to roll back fuel economy standards, combined with today’s announcement that it will revoke California’s authority to set its own standards, will produce years of litigation and sow disastrous market uncertainty, killing jobs and relinquishing U.S. leadership to international competitors. There is nothing good that comes from this – not for our automakers, our workers, or our communities.”

“Just last July, Ford, Honda, BMW of North America, and Volkswagen Group of America all worked with California to approve a voluntary framework for clean car standards. It is clear that today’s announcement is not being pursued in the interest of our companies, or the American people.”
