Alliance to Save Energy Announces Three New Board Members
Washington, D.C., August 2006 – The Alliance to Save Energy’s Board of Directors has elected three new members to its ranks: James E. Rogers, president and CEO of Duke Energy; John Fielder, the new president of Southern California Edison (SCE); and Bob Malone, chairman and president of BP America. Fielder replaces outgoing SCE President Bob Foster, who remains on the Alliance board in his new capacity as mayor of Long Beach, Calif., and Bob Malone replaces Ross Pillari, who has retired after 32 years of service to BP, while Rogers is an addition to the board.
Before the merger of Duke Energy and Cinergy Corp., Jim Rogers served as Cinergy’s chairman and chief executive officer for more than 11 years, as well as on the Cinergy board. In addition to serving as CEO, Rogers also is a director for Duke Energy. Rogers distinguished career has also included serving as chairman, president, and chief executive officer of PSI Energy; as executive vice president of interstate pipelines for the Enron Gas Pipeline; as a partner in the Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld law firm; as deputy general counsel at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission; as a law clerk for the Supreme Court of Kentucky; as assistant attorney general for the Commonwealth of Kentucky; and as reporter for the Lexington Herald-Leader. Rogers was recently elected chairman of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the national trade association of shareholder-owned electric companies and holds seats on the boards of the American Gas Association, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Business Roundtable, and National Coal Council.
“Jim Rogers joins the Alliance Board, and lends us his valuable leadership at a critical time in our nation’s energy history.” Callahan said. “Jim Rogers is a recognized champion of energy efficiency who leads by example in his own utilities’ operations, investments and policies, and who works to increase the prominence of energy efficiency in our nation’s energy portfolio through organizations like the Alliance.”
“In my new role as an Alliance Board member, I plan to continue to advocate for policies, programs and initiatives that will advance energy efficiency, which is this nation’s greatest energy resource and our most immediate and cost-effective means of tackling today’s high energy prices and building a sustainable energy future,” said Rogers. “As one of the world’s leading and most respected voices on energy efficiency, the Alliance provides a terrific platform for helping accomplish this all-important goal.”
As president of SCE since October 2005, John Fielder heads one of the nation’s largest electric utilities. Previously, as a senior vice president, he was responsible for developing and implementing regulatory policies and managing proceedings before the California Public Utilities Commission and other regulatory agencies, as well as for the utility’s environmental affairs. Fielder began his Edison career in 1970 and held a variety of supervisory and management positions. He is a member of the Rancho Los Cerritos Foundation and serves on the boards of directors of Miller Children’s Hospital and Aquarium of the Pacific.
“We are pleased that John Fielder will be taking the seat on the Alliance Board that Bob Foster filled so skillfully over the past year and a half,” said Alliance President Kateri Callahan. “We welcome John’s expertise, his history of public service, and the continuity he will provide for Southern California Edison’s significant involvement with the Alliance at the highest level.”
“Serving on the Alliance Board provides me with a valuable new avenue for advancing energy efficiency,” Fielder said. “SCE’s portfolio of customer energy efficiency programs is one of the largest in the nation in terms of level of investment and measured energy savings and demand reduction results. I am pleased to join with my colleagues on the Alliance Board to share best practices for how energy efficiency resources reduce cost and enhance reliability for the utility, while also providing direct economic and environmental benefits for our customers.”
Bob Malone was named chairman and president of BP America, Inc. effective July 1, 2006. Based in Houston, he serves as BP’s chief representative in the United States. He also is an executive vice president of BP p.l.c., the world’s second largest oil and gas company, and is a member of BP’s most senior executive management team. Prior to accepting his current position, Malone served as chief executive of BP Shipping Limited, where he was responsible for the operation of the energy industry’s largest oil and natural gas fleet. During his 32-year career in the mining and oil industry, he has developed a reputation for building teams and driving change, whether through stronger environmental performance or as a champion of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Malone has also served on the California Climate Action Registry Board of Directors, the Board of Regents for the University of Alaska system, and the board of the National Petroleum Council.
“Just as John Fielder carries on the tradition of Alliance Board service by SCE, Bob Malone does the same for BP America,” Callahan noted. “Moreover, as BP is the only oil company currently among the Alliance’s ranks, we greatly value the company’s perspective, as well as its creativity in disseminating the energy-efficiency message.”
“Energy is too valuable to waste. The consequences are too great for the environment and for the world economy. In the years ahead, the nations that are the most energy efficient will be the most productive and the most prosperous. The oil industry has an important role to play in developing better, cleaner, more diverse and more efficient energy options for consumers,” Malone said. “BP America takes this responsibility to heart, and I am proud to represent BP America on the Alliance Board.”
