Alliance Undaunted by CAFE Standards Delay
Washington, D.C., September 28, 2011 – “The Alliance to Save Energy reaffirms its support for the historic Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards announced by the Obama Administration in July, and we look forward to publication of the proposed rule in mid-November, said Alliance Senior Vice President for Policy and Research Floyd DesChamps.
“Given the complex rulemaking process involving a number of federal agencies and coordination with the state of California, we are not concerned that the administration is taking additional time to ensure that the standards are properly developed prior to release.
“As was noted in the administration’s recently issued Quadrennial Technology Review, reliance on oil is the greatest immediate threat to U.S. economic and national security. Today’s announcement in no way diminishes the Obama Administration’s commitment to decreasing U.S. oil dependence and reducing fuel costs for Americans.
“At the same time, the Alliance reiterates its call to revamp the outmoded testing procedures currently used to measure vehicle fuel economy so that the standards’ full economic, national security and social potential is realized.”
