Alliance Applauds Bipartisan Energy Efficiency Retrofit Proposal Co-Sponsored by Reps. McKinley, Welch
Declaring “It’s time we started growing our economy by stopping energy waste!” Alliance to Save Energy President Kateri Callahan applauded the bipartisan HOMES Act at a Capitol Hill press conference today. The bill, introduced by Reps. David McKinley (R-W.Va.) and Peter Welch (D-Vt.), would provide financial incentives that empower Americans to stop wasting energy in their homes.
“The Home Owner Managing Energy Savings (HOMES) Act would provide real savings for American families, create jobs and improve our overall economy by freeing up dollars to be used in more productive ways – whether buying consumer goods, saving for college tuition, or simply meeting monthly mortgage payments,” Callahan said.
Real Savings for American Households and Jobs
The Alliance has projected that American households will spend an average of $2,100 dollars on home energy bills this year. Improving the energy performance of a home by a minimum of 20%, as supported in the McKinley-Welch bill, would mean average yearly savings of $420 per family. At the 50% energy-savings level required for a larger rebate, the savings would amount to $1,000 or more each year.
“The Alliance has worked for 35 years to help Americans reduce their residential energy costs, and we heartily endorse the HOMES Act as a way to further that important mission,” Callahan continued. “With the domestic construction industry experiencing record unemployment in recent years and many consumers still struggling economically, the bill is a timely addition to continuing efforts to address rising energy costs, spur economic growth and protect the environment.”
She added, “Helping American families, stopping energy waste and creating jobs are not Republican or Democratic goals. Today, right now, they are national imperatives, and we hope it will be embraced by members from both sides of the aisle and both sides of Capitol Hill.
“The HOMES Act is an important vehicle for driving home-grown energy efficiency across the American economy, and we will be working alongside our leaders, Congressmen McKinley and Welch, and our other friends here today, to get this bill enacted into law this year,” Callahan concluded.
